PHILIPS' NEXT GENERATION IP DECT

Philips Business Communications (PBC) has announced the release of its next generation Mobile@Net IP DECT solution. Based on a new DECT access point, called AP200, the capacity and capabilities of this enterprise mobility solution are significantly enhanced. A unique channel license mechanism offers organisations utmost flexibility in accommodating their network, including the possibility to charge enterprises based on the capacity consumed.

IP DECT - the wireless solution for IP networks

With many companies switching over to a Voice over IP network, Mobile@Net IP DECT is a unique solution that combines the benefits of IP telephony with the qualities and facilities of the well-established DECT technology, providing perfect voice quality, seamless handover between cells and a secure air interface. With Mobile@Net IP DECT a single converged network can provide both fixed and wireless telephony, thus reducing dedicated cabling to the minimum. Introducing wireless telephony in a multi-site company or campus environment now is simply a matter of installing IP DECT at remote locations, with no need for additional remote equipment. Companies and organisations with an intranet, or any kind of IP network, can route IP DECT voice calls through that same network. Deploying Mobile@Net IP DECT protects investments in existing DECT handsets, applications and network infrastructure.

The second generation - more capacity and unique flexibility

Building on the success of the first generation, Philips has improved IP DECT in a number of ways. The new AP 200 DECT access point increases the capacity of the total solution by now supporting 12 channels and a network of 255 DECT access points. Secondly, built-in compression and silence suppression (based on G.729 standard) make Philips’ IP DECT ideal for branch offices. A striking innovation is that IP DECT now uses a unique license mechanism to handle traffic. Customers are offered a bundle of channel licenses which can be distributed freely over the existing DECT access points, herewith increasing the traffic capacity in a tailor made way. This not only gives customers the possibility to pay only for what they use, but also provides them with a very flexible mechanism to deploy and expand their network.

Continuous innovation

According to Frank van Ormondt, PBC’s Business Manager for Wireless solutions, there will be more IP DECT innovations from PBC later this year. A version operating in the 1.9 GHz frequency spectrum, suitable for many non-European countries, will be introduced. Also this year, new software will become available which does not require a server-based DECT controller and increases the system capacity to a total number of 6000 portable handsets.
