The Ospedale Generale Regionale ‘F. Miulli’ in Italy is a regional healthcare organization of ecclesiastic foundation, started in 1158 as Military Hospital (Age of Crusades), but also operating for civilians. Its historical headquarter in Acquaviva delle Fonti was left available to the municipality administration for social re-utilization projects, while the new Hospital Department inaugurated end of 2005 and built in agro of Acquaviva.

With a capacity of 709 patient accomodations, the Miulli Hospital is now one of the most important medical organizations in the Region of Puglie. Historically administered and headed by the Church, the hospital has gained acknowledgement for its medical activity over centuries.

Trainers since the origin for the development of medical structures in the area of Bari, the Administration and Healthcare Management of Miulli are now supervisors of Hospital Centres in Casamassima, Gioia del Colle and other municipal locations.

Active in research studies, the healthcare organization of Miulli is now the international pole of an advanced surgery technique for the treatment of tumors of the digestive system.

The Medical-hospital Attendant School of Miulli accomodates every year around 300 students and 80 teachers for each triennium session. Headquarter of university specialization since 1970, the Hospital Attendants School also educates people coming from the nearby regions of Basilicata and Calabria.

Requirements

The original project of TLC systems to be installed for the new Hospitality Department of Miulli provided for telephony cabling of a traditional type.

To reduce the costs of implementation of TCL systems and using state-of-the art technologies, the constructor enterprise of new Miulli (FIMCO S.p.A.) decided to unify the internal wiring for the TLC service in a full IP mode.

Because of the large structural extension, the internal mobile telephony service was playing a critical role to ensure immediate reachability of medical personnel and technical staff in charge of management and maintenance of medical-technological equipment.

Solution

The solution initally offered provided for a native IP SOPHO 2000 IPS system equipped with two PIMs, to perform the internal IP DECT mobile telephony service for 80 DAP AP200, each equipped with 6 bi-directional radio channels, 20x C944 portable phones and BCA trunk circuits for Add-On-type solution for multivendor environments.

The radio coverage initially did not include the underground premises which was destinated to host sophisticated technological installations and being subject to possible modifications during the course of operations.

But as during the course of 2006, the work carried out to complete the installation of medical-technological equipment on the underground floor, and because of the natural growth of requests to extend the mobile telephony service to an increasing number of users, the IP DECT 2000 IPS system was extended with 18 additional DAP AP200 and a total of 85x C944 portable phones, an increase of upto 40 times the number of VoIP channels.

At the same time, the demand of migration of trunk circuits from analogue to digital (2 flows of 2Mbps Q-SIG) enabled users to take advantage of advanced services, such as calling number identification and user identity presentation.

The importance of the mobile telephony service for Miulli can also be understood from their undersigning a Service and Maintenance agreement directly with NEC Philips Unified Solutions.
